What to do next in Sri Lanka if failed A/Ls.........?

This is for..................?

This article is not targetted at those who were lucky enough to get through the GCE A/L examination. This is targeted at the closer to 80% student population who do not have the bliss of obtaining basic qualifications to go to the next level.

Why this is .................?

This is mainly my reply to the young girl who sent me a letter in last month asking what to do when someone failed advanced level  examination. Since my reply to her can be useful to many other people, I'm publishing it here.

As I first read her mail, what came to my mind was the below dialog from the "Adventures of Alice in Wonderland".

'Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'

'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.

'I don't much care where --' said Alice.

'Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.

'--so long as I get somewhere,' Alice added as an explanation.

This has all I want to say. You asked me to show the direction. But it all depends on where you want to go.

But since you trust on me, may be I can help you with some tips.

Once, a friend of mine had to deal with a “wonderful” company secretary :).

In my efforts to help her, I got to know many interesting facts about some of the secretaries in Sri Lanka, and thought I should share.

Why a company needs a company secretary?

1. Because the companies Act (No 7 of 2007 – Sri Lanka) say so.

221 (1) Every company shall have a secretary.

2. There are many duties in a registered company to be performed by a company secretary.

Who can be a company secretary in Sri Lanka?

Usually company secretaries are Attorneys at law, Chartered Accountants or members of the Institute of chartered secretaries.

(222. The secretary of every company having a turnover or stated capital of an amount prescribed under this Act, shall have such qualifications as may be prescribed, having regard to the nature of the duties the secretary will be called upon to discharge.)

How to select an IT job in Sri Lanka?

How to decide whether to do computer / IT studies in Sri Lanka -Part 2

There's a saying that "Life is too short for the wrong job".

Therefore today I want to discuss how to decide whether to do an IT job or not. How to choose what sort of a computer job is suitable for you. More importantly I want to stress on the fact that how to decide whether this is the correct field, correct industry for you to settle down.

What you should decide if you are interested in doing a computer / IT job in Sri Lanka

Parents often tell me.

"My daughter is graduating in computer science in next year. Then can you find her a job?"

Then I ask,

"What sort of a job she is looking for? What type of a company she prefers?"

Then they say

"Anything is fine".

Back ground to decide whether to do computer / IT studies in Sri Lanka

What to do after A/Ls

Many parents has told me that, they prefer to send their children to follow a computer degree after finishing GCE Advanced Level exam. The main reason for their decision is, there's a general belife that there will be a job in the market for a student with an IT degree, those who do such jobs are getting paid high salaries and of course that's one of the fields which grows very fast. But neither parents, nor students have any idea why they should do a computer degree and what sort of a job, their education will offer them.

On the other hand, more than one thousand IT graduates comes to the Sri Lankan job market within a year. There are many graduates who complains that there are no jobs. Same as there many employers who complain that there are no talented employees who fit in to their job expectations.
